The Election Commission (EC) today officials said they initially accepted 119 and cancelled 54 nomination papers of candidates intending to contest upcoming elections from 13 parliamentary constituencies in Dhaka city.

EC’s returning officer for Dhaka Division and Dhaka’s Divisional Commissioner Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury made the announcement adding one nomination paper was kept suspended.

He said in the cases of independent candidates most were disqualified due to mismatched signatures of required one percent voter, loan default issues and missing signatures in affidavits.

In the case of party-backed candidates, Chowdhury said, nominations were cancelled mainly due to the absence of signatures from authorized party officials.

“The nomination papers were scrapped due to certain reasons which will be conveyed to candidates concerned in writing. The aggrieved persons may appeal against the decision to the Election Commission in between January 5 and 9,” Chowdhury said.

He said the nomination paper of Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Mohammad Ashraful Haque, wanting to contest the polls from Dhaka-18, was suspended as he sought time over issues related to his affidavit.

Chowdhury told reporters that his office scrutinized thoroughly the nomination papers throughout the day.
