The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for submitting income tax returns for individual taxpayers for the 2025–26 tax year by one month, setting the new cutoff date at December 31, 2025.

In a separate order, the NBR also allowed taxpayers facing registration-related complications in the e-return system to apply to their respective Deputy Commissioners of Taxes by December 15, 2025, with valid explanations for being unable to file online.

This year, online return submission has been made compulsory for all individual taxpayers except senior citizens aged 65 and above, people with disabilities, Bangladeshi citizens residing abroad, legal representatives filing returns on behalf of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh. Despite the exemption, these taxpayers may still opt to file online voluntarily, the NBR clarified.

Authorized representatives—including income tax lawyers, chartered accountants, CMAs, and chartered secretaries—are permitted to file e-returns on behalf of taxpayers. For expatriate Bangladeshis, online filing remains optional; however, they can register in the e-return system by emailing their passport number, NID, and email address to ereturn@etaxnbr.gov.bd to receive OTP and registration links for smooth online filing.

Taxpayers can submit their returns easily from home by entering accurate data on income, expenses, assets, and liabilities into the e-return portal without uploading any documents. Taxes can be paid digitally using debit or credit cards, internet banking, or mobile financial services such as bKash and Nagad. After submission, taxpayers can instantly download automated acknowledgement slips and tax certificates, further boosting the popularity of e-filing both domestically and abroad.

To facilitate the process, NBR has continued offering training on e-return filing, similar to last year, for both general taxpayers and authorized representatives. A dedicated call center (09643 71 71 71) is available for immediate support, while technical issues can also be reported through the eTax Service on www.etaxnbr.gov.bd. Help desks at tax zones across the country provide in-person and phone assistance during office hours.

Urging all taxpayers to file their returns through the e-return system within the extended deadline, the NBR reported that over 1.8 million taxpayers have already submitted their e-returns this year.
