The Fire Service and Civil Defense (FSCD) has urged the public to remain calm and follow essential safety measures during earthquakes, following a series of recent tremors—including a 5.7-magnitude quake felt across much of Bangladesh on November 21, 2025.
In a safety guideline issued today, the fire service emphasized that greater awareness and preparedness can significantly reduce the risks associated with earthquakes. The advisory also reminded citizens to call the FSCD hotline 102 for emergency assistance.
According to the guidelines, people should “stay calm and avoid panic” when an earthquake begins. Those on the ground floor are advised to exit immediately and move to an open area.
For people on upper floors of multi-story buildings, the FSCD recommends using the Drop-Cover-Hold technique—drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy desk or table, and hold on tightly. Individuals may also take shelter beside columns or under beams and protect their heads with pillows or cushions.
The advisory warns against using elevators during an earthquake. After the shaking stops, residents should promptly turn off electrical and gas connections. People are also advised to stay away from balconies, verandas, windows, bookshelves, cupboards, wooden furniture, and any heavy hanging objects.
The fire service further recommends keeping torches, helmets, emergency medicines, and whistles within easy reach.
Those who are outdoors should move to an open area away from trees, high-rise buildings, and electric poles. If inside a vehicle, drivers should stop in a safe, open space—clear of flyovers, over-bridges, trees, and electric poles—and remain inside until the tremors subside.
The FSCD also cautioned that aftershocks may follow the initial quake and urged people to avoid damaged buildings, bridges, and other vulnerable structures that may collapse further during subsequent tremors.
