At least six people were killed and many others injured after a 5.7-magnitude earthquake shook Dhaka and several nearby districts this morning.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) reported that the quake struck at 10:38am, with the epicentre at Madhabdi in Narsingdi, around 13 kilometres east of the BMD Seismic Centre in Agargaon. The US Geological Survey (USGS) later placed the epicentre 14 kilometres west-southwest of Narsingdi at a depth of 10 kilometres.

According to a PID release citing the National Disaster Response Coordination Centre (NDRCC), buildings in Bangshal, Armanitola, Matuail, Khilgaon, Hatirjheel, Kalabagan and New Market—along with Ilyas Hall of Dhaka College—sustained structural damage.

By 4pm, authorities confirmed six deaths: three in Dhaka, two in Narsingdi and one in Narayanganj. Around 60 injured people are undergoing treatment at Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The victims in Dhaka were identified as Rafiul Islam, 21, a second-year student of Sir Salimullah Medical College; Akhtar, 14; and Sabuj, 30. Their bodies have been kept at the Mitford Hospital morgue.

Following the tremor, the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief activated a control room at the NDRCC to oversee monitoring and emergency response efforts.
