Bangladesh faced heartbreak as West Indies beat them in a tense Super Over to level the three-match ODI series 1-1 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday.

Chasing 214 runs to win, West Indies ended their innings at 213 for nine, taking the match to a Super Over — the first-ever tied international match for Bangladesh in 813 games across all formats.

In the Super Over, West Indies scored 10 runs for one wicket and successfully defended the target, as Akeal Hosein bowled tightly to restrict Bangladesh to 9-1, giving the visitors a two-run victory.

Earlier, Bangladesh posted 213 for nine, thanks to Rishad Hossain’s late fireworks. He hit an unbeaten 39 off just 14 balls, including three fours and three sixes. Opener Soumya Sarkar scored a patient 45 from 89 balls, while captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz stayed not out on 32.

Gudakesh Motie was the best bowler for West Indies with 3-44, while Akeal Hosein and Alick Athanaze took two wickets each.

In reply, West Indies struggled against Bangladesh’s spinners on a turning pitch. Nasum Ahmed struck early, dismissing Brandon King for a duck, and Rishad Hossain continued his good form with 3-42.

West Indies fell to 133-7 before captain Shai Hope (53 off 67 balls) and Justin Greaves (26) added 44 runs to keep hopes alive. Hope and Akeal Hosein took the game to the final over, needing five runs to win.

Saif Hassan bowled an excellent last over, giving away just four runs and taking a wicket. However, a dropped catch by wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan Sohan on the final ball allowed West Indies to take two runs and tie the match.

That missed chance cost Bangladesh dearly, as West Indies held their nerve in the Super Over to win by two runs.

The series is now tied 1-1, with everything to play for in the final ODI.
