Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has reaffirmed the Election Commission’s (EC) commitment to conducting free, fair, and neutral elections to restore the voting rights of the country’s 18 crore people.

Speaking at the inauguration of a training program for voter list enumerators and supervisors at the Electoral Training Institute in Agargaon, Nasir Uddin stated, “There is no room for stereotypical methods. Our pledge is to deliver a credible election process from which voters have been deprived for a long time.”

He emphasized the EC’s responsibility to address the deprivation of voters and ensure their right to participate in the democratic process. “I want to eradicate the pain of those who have been denied their voting rights,” he added.

Acknowledging the transitional period under the interim government, the CEC said public expectations from the government and the EC are significant. He also pointed out the need for reforms in legal frameworks, some of which have been pending since the caretaker government of 1996.

“We are working towards implementing reforms in line with the recommendations of the reform commission,” Nasir Uddin said, announcing that door-to-door data collection for voter list updates will commence on January 20, urging everyone’s cooperation.

Election Commissioner Abdur Rahman El Masud highlighted the importance of an accurate voter list as the foundation for fair elections, while Commissioner Tahmina Ahmed warned that the commission would not tolerate malicious actions by its officials.

Commissioner Anwarul Islam Sarker assured that the EC would take necessary measures to restore election credibility. Meanwhile, Brigadier General (retd) Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah emphasized integrity in the voter list update process, urging officials to address issues of deceased, fake, and new voters without ulterior motives.

The EC reiterated its dedication to creating a transparent and credible electoral system to uphold democracy in the country.
