In the past two days, heavy rainfall and rapid runoff from upstream hilly areas across the border have caused flooding in approximately 100 villages in Jhenaigati and Nalitabari upazilas of Sherpur, leaving hundreds of families stranded. The district recorded 225 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, leading to the submersion of Jhenaigati upazila headquarters and affecting offices, schools, and markets.

Nakibuzzaman Khan, executive engineer of the Water Development Board (WDB) in Sherpur, reported that the Bhogai River was flowing 172 cm above the danger level at Nakugaon and 56 cm above the danger level at Nalitabari. Four unions in Nalitabari upazila and three municipal wards have been flooded, with thousands of residents marooned and several roads waterlogged.

The Chellakhali River was reported to be 526 cm above the danger mark, and the Someswari River’s water levels continue to rise due to the ongoing influx of hilly waters.

The engineer added that if weather conditions improve soon, the flood situation could quickly stabilize.
