Myanmar authorities have confirmed to Bangladesh that 180,000 Rohingyas, out of a list of 800,000 sheltered in Bangladesh, have been verified as eligible for repatriation. The list was originally submitted by Bangladesh in six batches between 2018 and 2020.
An additional 70,000 Rohingyas are currently under final verification, pending further scrutiny of their photographs and identities. The update was shared by U Than Shew, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Myanmar, during a meeting with Dr Khalilur Rahman, High Representative to the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, held on the sidelines of the sixth BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok today.
This marks the first confirmed list of verified returnees, representing a significant step forward in efforts to resolve the protracted Rohingya crisis. Myanmar also assured that verification of the remaining 550,000 Rohingyas from the original list would proceed on an expedited basis.
During the meeting, Dr Rahman extended condolences for the recent earthquake victims in Myanmar and conveyed Bangladesh’s readiness to provide further humanitarian aid to the affected communities.
