Bird Fair at Jahangirnagar University: An Initiative to Inspire Students in Bird Conservation and Environmental Protection

A Bird Fair was held at Jahangirnagar University on Friday (January 3) with the aim of promoting bird conservation and raising environmental awareness. The fair was inaugurated in front of the Zahir Raihan Auditorium by releasing balloons. Distinguished guests present at the inaugural ceremony included the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Sohel Ahmed, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences Professor Mohammad Mafruhi Sattar, Proctor Professor Dr. AKM Rashidul Alam, and Chief Conservator of Forests of the Bangladesh Forest Department Md. Amir Hossain Chowdhury.

Also in attendance were Mukit Majumder Babu, Chairman of Prokriti O Jibon Foundation, along with representatives from IUCN Bangladesh, Arannayk Foundation, Bird Club, and other organizations. Professor Dr. Kamrul Hasan from the Department of Zoology, and convener of the event, delivered the welcome speech, while the department’s chair, Professor Dr. Md. Mansurul Haque, gave the closing remarks.

he day-long fair featured various activities, including a children’s bird-themed drawing competition, quizzes, bird identification contests, book and poster exhibitions, and discussions on birds. Awards such as the Big Bird Bangladesh Award, Scientific Publication Award, Conservation Media Award, and the Special Recognition Award 2025 were also presented during the event.

Since 2001, the Department of Zoology has been organizing this fair annually. This year, the co-organizers included the Wildlife Rescue Center, Bangladesh Bird Club, Arannayk Foundation, Prokriti O Jibon Foundation, Bangladesh Zoological Society, IUCN, and the Bangladesh Forest Department.

The organizers stated that the primary goal of the fair is to raise awareness about bird conservation and environmental protection while fostering students’ interest in different bird species.
