Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emphasized the need for timely reforms and an elected government to address the nation’s ongoing instability and economic challenges. Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion organized by Jatiya Ganotantrik Party (ZAGPA) at the Jatiya Press Club, Fakhrul warned against prolonged unelected governance and called for prioritizing the people’s mandate.

“We have no objection to reforms, but the biggest issue plaguing the country is instability, which makes people feel insecure,” Fakhrul said. “Many problems can be mitigated with the presence of an elected government because the power of such a government is derived from the people.”

The event, themed “Be United in the Spirit of Protecting Independence and Sovereignty,” was chaired by Jatiya Ganotantrik Party (ZAGPA) President and freedom fighter Khandaker Lutfar Rahman. Special guests included BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Amanullah Aman and Jatiya Party President Mostafa Jamal Haider.

Addressing the ongoing economic crisis, Fakhrul highlighted the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities like rice, pulses, oil, and eggs, which have worsened the plight of ordinary citizens. “The poor are struggling to afford basic food items. Unfortunately, no serious efforts are being made to address these pressing issues,” he stated.

Fakhrul also commented on recent proposals to lower the minimum voter age to 17 years, calling for greater stakeholder consultation to avoid public controversy. “The Election Commission should handle this matter carefully. Premature announcements have only created confusion and could delay preparations further,” he remarked.

Reaffirming BNP’s support for the interim government, Fakhrul urged it to expedite reforms and organize elections swiftly. “We are with you and will remain so. Complete the necessary reforms and ensure elections are held. All crises will be resolved when power returns to the people’s government,” he concluded.
