The government has announced a seven-member National Independent Investigation Commission to re-examine the 2009 BDR Pilkhana massacre that occurred on February 25 and 26. The commission will be led by former BGB Director General A L M Fazlur Rahman and has been tasked with submitting its findings within 90 days.
A Cabinet Division gazette notification confirmed the commission’s formation under Section 3 of the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1956, following a High Court directive. The aim is to investigate domestic and foreign conspiracies, uncover the events surrounding the massacre, and identify those involved, including perpetrators, conspirators, and evidence tamperers.
The other six members of the commission are:
- Retired Major General Md Jahangir Alam Talukder
- Retired Brigadier General Md Saidur Rahman, Bir Pratik
- Retired Joint Secretary Munsi Alauddin Al Azad
- Retired DIG Dr. M Akbar Ali
- Md Shariful Islam, Associate Professor, Dhaka University
- Md Shahnewaz Khan Chandan, Assistant Professor, Jagannath University
The commission is authorized to visit any location in Bangladesh, summon and interrogate suspects, and explore any evidence related to the case. The Ministry of Home Affairs will provide necessary logistical and financial support.
This announcement was made on BGB Day at a function at BGB headquarters, where Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd) highlighted the commission’s formation.
