In a significant development, the Saudi government has agreed to allow Bangladeshi Hajj pilgrims to travel by sea, following a proposal from Bangladesh. The decision was confirmed during a bilateral meeting held in Jeddah on Sunday between Bangladesh’s Religious Affairs Adviser, Dr. KM Khalid Hossain, and Saudi Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Dr. Tawfiq Fawzan Al-Rabiah.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Dr. Khalid Hossain proposed the sea travel option, to which the Saudi government expressed no objection. However, discussions with port authorities and consultations with shipping companies will be necessary before finalizing the arrangements.
The Bangladesh government is considering sending 2,000 to 3,000 pilgrims by sea on a trial basis this year.
Additionally, Dr. Tawfiq Fawzan Al-Rabiah assured improvements in the biometric system for pilgrims and the issuance of Munazzim (multiple-entry) visas for Hajj agency representatives. He also pledged to address issues related to lost luggage under the ‘Route to Makkah’ program in 2023 and 2024.
Bangladesh officials, including Religious Secretary AH Hamid Jamaddar and Consul General Miah Mohammad Mainul Kabir, were present at the meeting.
