Two Die After Being Swept Away by Floodwaters in Sherpur

At least two people, including a woman, lost their lives after being swept away by floodwaters in Sherpur yesterday evening.

The victims were identified as Rahija Begum, 40, wife of Manik Mia from Baluchar in Baghber union, and Idris Ali, 75, a farmer from Andharupara in Nayabil union, Nalitabari upazila. Their bodies were recovered by their families with the help of locals.

Baghber Union Chairman Abdus Sabu confirmed Rahija Begum’s death. According to locals, around 7:00 PM, Rahija, along with her child, was searching for a safe place when she slipped and was swept away by the strong current. Her child, however, survived by clinging to the root of an uprooted tree, locals said.

In another incident, Nalitabari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Masud Rana stated that Idris Ali was swept away by floodwaters while returning home from Khalisakura Garobazar at around 6:00 PM.

Rescue operations, led by the Fire Service, Civil Defence, and local volunteers, have been initiated to assist those trapped in the hilly areas affected by the floods.
